Engine oil degrades over time and with use. Knowing when to change it — rather than just following a fixed mileage interval — can save your engine and your wallet.
1. Dark, Dirty Oil

Fresh oil is amber and translucent. As it ages and collects combustion byproducts, it turns dark and opaque. Check your dipstick regularly — if the oil looks black and gritty, it’s time for a change.
2. Engine Noise and Knocking
Oil provides a protective film between engine components. When it breaks down, metal parts make more contact, producing ticking, knocking, or rumbling sounds — especially at startup.
3. Oil Level Dropping Frequently

If you’re topping up oil more often than usual, your engine may be burning or leaking oil. Either way, it’s a sign that something needs attention.
4. Exhaust Smoke
Blue or grey smoke from the exhaust is a classic sign of oil burning in the combustion chamber — often caused by worn seals or rings combined with degraded oil.
5. Oil Change Warning Light
Modern vehicles have oil life monitoring systems. When the warning light comes on, don’t ignore it. It’s your car telling you it needs attention now.
Regular oil changes with a quality product like APL engine oil are the single most effective thing you can do to extend your engine’s life.
