Your vehicle manufacturer specifies the exact viscosity grade and performance standard required. Always start there. Using a heavier oil than recommended can reduce fuel economy; using a lighter oil can compromise protection.
Consider Your Climate
If you operate in extreme cold, a lower winter viscosity (the “W” number) ensures the oil flows quickly at startup. In hot climates or high-load applications, a higher operating viscosity provides better film strength.
